HDDVDlogo.jpgThe International Business Times is reporting that over the “Blak Friday Weekend”, the biggest shopping weekend of the year, BD movies outsold HD DVD movies 3 to 1.(likity link link).

Data from this past weekend – the largest retail shopping day of the year – showed that 72.6 percent of high-definition discs purchased by consumers were Blu-ray Disc, and just 27.4 percent were HD DVD, according to Nielsen VideoScan.

That very well may be the case. The question I have though is whether the 10 HD DVDs purchasers of HD DVD players receive with their purchase are counted in these numbers. With the HD DVD group’s recent announcement that they have sold 750,000 standalone players, at 5 free movies that’s 3.7M HD DVD movies out there. Take into consideration retailer bonuses and in-box HD DVDs, there could be a bare minimum of 7.4M HD DVD’s in the hands of HD DVD customers. With HD DVD players priced at nearly half that of BD players and the PS3 expect the HD DVD user base to grow.
